Tip Tuesday: Mastering Mascara

The one makeup product I would want on a deserted island (other than a lifetime supply of sunblock) would be mascara. I can’t face the world without it. And considering the elements on an island, I’d make it waterproof! - Bethany Karlyn

Mastering mascara may seem like an easy feat, but there are many minor steps to take into account. When do you curl? How to get rid of the clumps? What to do BEFORE mascara?

Bethany Karlyn, creator of PRTTY PEAUSHUN shares her lash advice here:

Prep-talk!

In preparation, first, tissue off any possible moisturizer from lashes and dust lightly with powder. This gives a nice base to build on.

To curl or not to curl? And WHEN?

An eyelash curler will really open your eyes. Be sure to curl before mascara. Start at the base of the lashes and “walk” the curler out along the length of the lash by squeezing at the root then midway, then again at the tip to achieve the softest curl and avoid a 90 degree bend.

Give a heated eyelash curler a try for the next step in eyelash curling technology. To get the same effect on the cheap, hit your metal eyelash curler with a blast of heat from your hairdryer. Be sure to check the temperature on the inside of your wrist before applying to your lash. It should be warm enough to set the curl but not warm enough to scorch.

The main event

Apply 2 to 3 thin coats of mascara then separate lashes with an eyelash comb if needed.

Mascara mishaps

Mascara drying out and getting clumpy? Get a few more uses by dipping the closed tube of mascara into a cup of very hot water. This will loosen the product up again for a time until

you can replace your mascara. Remember, pumping the wand in and out of the mascara tube will force air into the tube and dry it out quicker. Instead, just swish the wand around inside the tube and see how much longer it lasts.

Mascara smudgies under the eyes? Only use mascara on the upper lashes and curl the lashes so they don’t bump under the eyes. If you can’t bare to be without mascara on your lower lashes, consider using waterproof just on the lowers. Smudge-proof formulas can be a nice happy medium for top and bottom.

*To open up your eyes and show off those lashes even more, apply Prtty Peaushun to the brow bone to highlight and brighten!*

Trip Tips - Glow on the Go!

Hopefully it's a fabulous vacation that you'll need this advice for, but maybe it's a business trip. Either way, if you're taking off anytime soon, make sure your beauty routine is ready to be sky high!

Airplanes are extremely hard on skin due to dehydration, so this is the perfect time to slather the face and body with PRTTY PEAUSHUN in PLANE (Ha! We couldn't resist!)

Our aviation advice? Freshen up with a spritz! Drink lots of water, no caffeine, alcohol or salty snacks, and spritz with a tiny (under 3 oz. of course) travel size atomizer. Look for mostly water with the fewest additional ingredients, to avoid irritation. Best to fly sans makeup if possible. Wear only smudge-proof mascara on your top lashes, lots of moisturizer all over (this is where PRTTY PEAUSHUN comes in) and lip balm.

Up up and away and happy jet-setting!

Tip Tuesday - Start with a good foundation!

Most pieces of work begin with a solid base - the primer on a canvas, the structure of a building, or the outline to a piece of writing - so why should your beauty routine be any different? Whether you're wearing barely-there makeup or a full face, the right base or foundation is ESSENTIAL.

Regardless if you're partial to liquid, powder, mousse or whatever consistency you like, some basic rules apply. You know you've found the right foundation shade when you look like you're not wearing any at all and you just have naturally perfect skin (we wish this would ALWAYS be the case.)

Foundation with a yellow undertone looks the most natural on all skin tones, as opposed to a pink undertone. You'll know you've found the right shade when it blends seamlessly and disappears into your skin.

Another key detail is how you're skin will react. Foundation breaking you out? It may contain oils that clog the pores. Look for a product that is oil-free or non-comedogenic.

As with any beauty regimen, we're always partial to NATURAL products. Just think, you're pores are soaking up your cosmetics all day, so skip on harsh chemicals if you can.

Lastly, while PRTTY PEAUSHUN is known to do wonders for the body, it can also make for a lovely mug:

FOR A MINIMAL/NATURAL LOOK

  • PRTTY PEAUSHUN makes for an excellent base - mix a tiny amount of PP with your favorite foundation for the ultimate tinted moisturizer.
FOR FULLER COVERAGE
  • Apply a small amount of PRTTY PEAUSHUN before foundation and create a glow that will peek through your makeup. Light, Medium, Dark and Deep Dark add a great glow and color while Plain will simply provide luminous and dewy skin (both perfect for summer!)
