Beauty tool cleaning with Bethany Karlyn

So maybe if we start spring-cleaning now this winter weather will go away? (If only!)

Either way, there are certain things that you shouldn’t wait until that one time of year to clean, (hopefully clothes, dishes, all those everyday things.) But one everyday item seems to fall through the cracks are your makeup tools.

We know you wouldn’t go months without washing your every day face washcloth (gross,) so why neglect your beauty tools?

Although we’d love to believe our skin is flawless and clean, every time we use makeup brushes they are collecting bacteria, oils and dead skin. Soon, that builds up and makeup isn’t the only thing we’re painting on our faces anymore.

So, in order to avoid a bacteria breeding ground and caked-up makeup in your brushes, you must clean them! There are many methods out there, but yours truly, celebrity makeup artist and creator of Prtty Peaushun, Bethany Karlyn, is here to share her tips with you!

Beauty tool cleaning with Bethany Karlyn

Parian Spirit (1) has always been in my kit since the beginning of time. It cleans, conditions and disinfects all brushes including sable and squirrel hairs. This environmentally safe cleaner dissolves all types of makeup products including oils, powders, waxes and adhesives without the need for water. No artificial colors or fragrances. Won't damage paint or wooden brush handles. Mild citrus scent. Most importantly… it's fast-drying. This is essential for the set.

Another great option when no water is available is makeup remover face wipes. I use Comodynes wipes (2). I always have the sensitive formula on hand. I used to bring a suitcase full of these back from Paris when I'd go to do the shows. Now they're available at Trader Joes! Infinitely less expensive than a round trip flight to France… but not quite as fun!

For convenience especially when traveling or for my makeup kit, I love the new Beauty Blender Solid (3) for cleaning my brushes as well as my beauty blender. It's everything the original cleanser is plus the ease of portability of a solid. Light lavender scent.

At home or in a hotel, when there's plenty of time for drying, a mild shampoo will do the trick or a gentle dish washing liquid. Just as they cut through oils for hair or dishes, these products do the same for the oils in makeup. After washing and thoroughly rinsing, I like to spin the handles quickly between my palms to create a centrifugal force that spins all the excess water out of the brush hair. Then I reform the brush hairs into the intended shape and stand it in a glass to dry.

We'd love to hear your tried and true methods!

Happy cleaning!

You use THAT for WHAT!?

We know you love spending an arm and a leg on beauty items... (uhh, false!)

With new trends and products coming out, what seems like everyday, it's almost impossible and bank-breaking to keep up. (Not to mention back-breaking if you try carrying it around all at once!)

Here to make your life a little easier, we'll be sharing some not-so-heard-of tips, products and unconventional items that you can implement into your beauty regimen to lighten your load or just mix it up a bit.

Every week, discover multiple ways to use beauty products or new ways to use products you may already have around your house.

Of course, it's only appropriate to start out our You use THAT for WHAT!? posts with … yours truly, Prtty Peaushun!

Prtty Peaushun, skin tight body lotion with glowing reviews, we know. But, (unless you've scoured the FAQ on the Prtty Peaushun website,) you probably didn't know that this magic potion is also great for curly hair, fresh ink, insect repellant/bites and heals sunburns -- all on top of helping the appearance of imperfections, cellulite and giving an amazing glow! Okay we're bragging a bit now...

Curly Sues: Blend a drop of Prtty Peaushun on your hands and smooth over hair's surface to de-frizz or mix it with your leave-in conditioner. (It's also great for glowing highlights!) Experiment with amounts to find your best results.

Tatted?: Prtty Peaushun (in plain) is great for healing fresh ink. The lotion also makes a tattoo's brights brighter and darks darker.

Because Prtty Peaushun is made with almost all natural ingredients, it can safely be used in many ways including on the face and one Facebook fan even suggested lips!

Have you tried any other uses for Prtty Peaushun? We want to hear 'em!

Feeling Lucky to be included in this Lucky Community!

Kelsey Nicole, contributor to Lucky Magazine Community and blogger,  wrote this lovely piece about switching over to natural products for her skin care needs.  Of course she had to include Prtty Peaushun!!  Our lotion is made from 92% RAW natural ingredients.   Read about all the amazing products she is resolved to trying this year!

My third and final goal for 2013 is to use more natural beauty products. What do I mean by natural? I mean products without parabens, sulfates, synthetic materials, petrochemicals, phthalates, GMOs, formaldehyde, triclosan, DPD, the list goes on and on.

Last year I read, No More Dirty Looks by Siobhan O'Connor and Alexandra Spunt, and became MUCH more aware of the chemicals in the products I was using on my skin. It is unbelievable how many untested chemicals are floating around in the products we put in contact with our skin everyday (hair care included!).

I often go back to the book, No Dirty Looks, to reread sections and refresh my memory. After reading the book on my Kindle I actually bought it a second time in the paperback version so I flip through it easier (nerd alert!). Another resource I use often is the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database where you can search through over 78,000 products to see how your favorite ones score in terms of safety.

After becoming more educated about the vast amount of untested chemicals I was putting myself in contact with everyday, I began to make small changes in my daily routine and was incredibly happy with the results. This year, my goal is to do more. After a little more experimenting, I am planning to dedicate a entire post or series comparing my former daily routine to my new, natural and organic routine. Here are some green products I would love to try this year:

Looking for some sound advice for 2013?  Business Week found some for you!

—Ping Fu, CEO, Geomagic and author of “Bend, Not Break”

—Caroline Ghosn, CEO, the Levo League

—Chip and Dan Heath, authors of “Made to Stick” and “Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work”
